Meet the manager!

September 08, 2014

What do you do? (include job at Magpie, as well as outside jobs/activities)

I am a manager and buyer at Magpie. I get to collaborate with our phenomenal team in the store every day, connect with talented local and national artists and makers, and hand-pick new products to share with our discerning and stylish customers. I am also a fine artist. Printmaking is my medium of choice at the moment.

Describe your personal style.

My personal style is simple and classic. I love it when outfits look like they could be from any time period. I bike and walk to get around so comfortable clothes and shoes are a must. I've also come to appreciate good-quality items that will last.

Who are you favorite designers and artists?

I love so many of the artists we work with at Magpie. Some of my favorites include South End Textiles, Union Press, Sally Harless, Looka Jewelry and The Big Harumph - there are too many to list. Some other artists I admire who cannot be found at Magpie include multi-disciplinary performer/writer/filmmaker Miranda July, the novelist and short-story writer Haruki Murakami, and Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcut printer Hiroshige to name only a few.

What are your favorite places to shop?

My favorite Boston/Cambridge-area shops are Black Ink, Abodeon, Salvage Ltd., the Cambridge Antique Mall and Suzuki Bean. My favorite boutique is Brooklyn, NY is Cat Bird.

Who are your style icons?

Sofia Coppola and Frida Khalo.

What was your most recent purchase?

I found great vegan boots at Sudo shoes, an all-vegetarian shoe and accessories shop on Mass. Ave. near Porter Square.

Any stories about amazing pieces you’ve scored?

My ultimate score is my vintage silver Motobecane road bike, found in a basement, and brought back to life by Ferris Wheels bike shop in JP.

Do you have any smart shopping advice?

The best advice I can give is to shop small, independent businesses (artists also count as small businesses!). You are supporting the business-owners that care the most about your community by choosing to shop there versus a big box or chain store.

What’s the best thing about what you do?

I get to work with people who love good design and being creative as much as I do.
